Dmitry Torgovitsky grew up in Russia (back then the Soviet Union) and was educated there as a scientist. In 1990 he came to the United States and entered New York University, where he studied film. He supported himself in a variety of jobs ranging from a rickshaw driver and dishwasher in a Japanese restaurant to a helium balloon delivery person.

Additionally he took classes from Mike Kuchar and Jennifer Reeves at the Millennium Film Workshop.

Since 1995 Torgovitsky has been working in Film and Television in New York City and all over East and West Coast
