It's certainly a plus if yours is based on actual events. However, you must be specific about the detail that encompass his conflict. How does it go from "his journey of self-discovery coming to a halt.." to "..almost ending his life"?
"when he hears about gay cancer.." is your Inciting Incident, right? How does that fling him into ignorance, fear, hate and religion; which has such a wide possibility of plot, suggesting anything can happen...
What becomes his Objective GOAL a result of the Inciting Incident? What is the nature of action must he take to achieve this specific Goal?
Where is your plot headed??
Think in terms of a starting point and an end point.
