Why? Why is it important to show the potential of support magic? What is standing in his way? What incident has led to this situation?

I would think “Rudolf the red nosed reindeer” Here would be an example of a brief outline.

As a kid he was ridiculed for not having combat magic (Probably by a specific bully)
Now, something happens, The earth is attacked by giant robots (Just an example) and he must use his support magic

He tries to defeat the robots, and fails, there is a low point in the story.

However his bully tormentor who everyone thinks will save the planet tries and fails as well. All is lost
The story comes to a climax when the two put aside their differences, team up and win.
Then all the reindeer love him.
      The end.

“Combat Magic” ?can mean…. anything. ?The protagonist needs a specific magical ability or skill.

(Like Rudolf: ?his only claim to fame,?the only thing he has going for him that makes him stand out from his peers is his aberrant nose. ?Not his antlers, not his hoofs — his nose. )
