The MC will end up mostly the same way he started a jock. Why not have him change over the course of the story?
Have him go from jock to robotics genius and help thousands of crippled people – higher stakes and a noble goal.

      For example:
After an injury ruins his scholarship, a jock must win a robotics competition to fund his invention that will help restore independent mobility to thousands of people around the world.

Seems a little far fetched to me…that a non researcher or heavy science person could just magically come up with a solution to say “fixing an ACL tear, a common, but highly scientific procedure.” What if the jock sacrifice his body for the same optimist goal? More real, and more dangerous.

      Something like this:
After an injury ruins his scholarship, a jock volunteers for experimental robotic procedures to help him, and thousands of others, restore independent mobility.

A noble cause…and what could possibly go wrong? ?

Anyone can apply themselves to learn if they are well motivated enough – the premise is not probable but plausible.

My take: When he loses his scholarship to injury, an arrogant former player takes up team eSports and must learn what it takes to be a leader to guide his team to victory.

It is a bit wordy, but I think it is more suited as I think it is more believable that a Jock would know how to play a game like Madden, or any game for that matter, than to suddenly be an inventor.
