      The boy comes off as a weak character, driven by circumstances, “spiritual and surreal signs”.

      The job a *pro*tagonist is to be *pro*active, to sit in the driver’s seat steering the plot, not riding along in the passenger seat in a plot vehicle steered by others or by circumstances.
