As Nir Shelter said. ?Why must the reporter do the hit man’s job? ?Why doesn’t the reporter just let the hit man solve his problem by killing the target who threatens to expose him?

The logic connecting the stakes, actions and goal is unclear.

How does him killing a CIA target going to prevent his “…seedy past…” from being exposed?

Secondly, he seems unlikable. Is he really willing to kill another human (CIA target or not) in order to preserve his good name?

Empathy may be a big problem here.

      >>unscrupulous reporter

I dunno. Not exactly a protagonist to sympathize with or root for. ?And his motives are purely selfish — he’s not trying to redeem himself, salvage his life; he’s just trying to cover his own “seedy past”, his own rear end.

The fact that you are re-visiting the concept seems to indicate that it has hooked into your mind. ?What is the hook for you in the story and/or character?

Again another tweak of an older version, just been revisiting some old stories with fresh eyes. However, no more for a while as I am off to write reviews to pay for these posts 🙂
