You haven’t given us sufficient reason to root for the lead character, in fact after reading this, I am kinda pulling for the journalist to uncover the truth.

There is no cure for overexposure to radioactivity.

Perhaps change it so the experiment eruption is a malicious act carried out by a?rival. This way it isn’t his fault and he isn’t covering up rather being a hero by saving the city.
If there is no cure perhaps he can try and get the city evacuated instead, and at the same time help track down the person responsible.

I could be wrong, but I think it would be extremely hard to keep a nuclear accident secret. Like dpg?said there would be radioactivity, which causes disease, without being a disease itself.

Radiation tends to be detected, most likely by government authorities which would investigate.
If the experiment takes place at a research facility, or at a nuclear power plant, I’m pretty sure the radiation would be detected there first and, the whole thing would have to be investigated.
If the protagonist is someone who is doing nuclear experiments on his own in his mom’s basement, I’m pretty sure the Department of Homeland Security very likely would be among those called in to investigate. If radioactivity?comes from a place where it’s not supposed to, in a densely populated area, I suspect a lot of people are going to leap to the conclusion that it’s terrorism.
But then again, I could be completely wrong.

Bernstr?m suggests a a more interesting and credible scenario.

Because in fact, it ?would be relatively easy to detect the leakage, even trace it back to its source, it incites authorities to overreact. ?They jump to the conclusion it was a terrorist attack. Panic and paranoia ensue.

Since the genre is thriller, there has to be an element well-justified fear. ? The radioactive leakage could have been the result of a Doh! moment by an inexperienced technician, but ?what if his intentions were not benign?
