Yeah, I would say that would qualify as the one other thing. Very good

(The ex didn't leave the money out of a sense of restitution for his wrongs but out of vindictiveness, like a trap)

I like it.

Thanks for the feedback Richiev! I'm thinking that she rightfully feels that she's entitled to the money because of the pain and suffering he caused her but then is consumed by guilt after seeing his surviving children fall into poverty as a result. You would have a specific incident that embodies this and for which the protagonist feels residual guilt (the teenage child tries to steal a car and crashes it, killing an innocent bystander, etc). The 'twist' then becomes that the protagonist realises that her deceased ex did not leave her the money out of some misguided attempt at forgiveness but rather as an act of vengeance, where he knew that leaving her the money would push her into making a decision that she ultimately regretted and that would torment her, thus exacting his perceived revenge upon her. Maybe this is along the lines of the 'extra thing'?
