This is a nice way of telling a story. It is perhaps even a pitch. But what is the story?

Traditionally there is something to achieve and the things in the way. ?You have describe a nice hook for a film, not a story.

What makes it messy? That is the story.

You have told us who the narrator is, but who is the lead character?

I agree with the previous comments.

It sounds like they’re kind of story, where there is a second story and within the first one, and the main character is the listener of the second story. Then, we get into a cut between the two stories, where there is a second character, the protagonist of the second story, etc. etc.
