I’m thinking of Quiet Place, Birdbox and It Comes at Night as examples of stories where the enemy attacks happen at a certain time or for a certain reason and the characters have to work around that in order to survive.

As dpg asked, what are the details involved with not surviving? Perhaps its a competition with stages, and the loser becomes the main ingredient for the next dish, only the participants don't realize it at first. I like this one. Reminds me of 'Cape Fear' but with a ghost twist. Also 'Shocker', that Wes Craven's 80's B-movie about a serial killer's spirit using electric power to kill. I imagine being a ghost gives the killer a couple of advantages (invisibility, teleportation, and so on). I’d like to see what kind of things the family man would do to stop him.

But is the ghost only looking for vengeance? Maybe the family man did something horrible to him and kept it in secret. That would put him in jeopardy with his family also. I don’t know, maybe the ghost was a business associate and got betrayed and killed by the family man to get his share of the company. I think the lead character’s contradiction would add depth to him and the story as a whole.
