Wouldn’t it be even funnier if you stand the premise on its head: what if they don’t break up but both compete for the position? ?Can their romance survive the rivalry?

I believe DPG makes a good point, there is more conflict if they are still together, especially when they begin using negative campaigning.?

However; if you like the story as is, I would personalize it a little. Give us a point of view and a goal.

This would just be an example, yours would be different:
      ———————————————–
“After a viscous break -up a scorned head cheerleader vows to win the school election against her cheating ex-boyfriend, the star QB who is on the fast track to Harvard.”
      ———————————————-
hope that helped, good luck with this!

Agreed with DPG, keep them together for more conflict and subsequently more humour.
