      >>the clan leader catches up forcing the protagonist to help him get the gold

Okay, but why would he need the banker’s help to do that? Again, why can’t the clan-leader just take advantage of the chaos and breakdown of law and order to break into and loot the storage vaults himself?

Also the plot seems to fall into the genre of a heist story. In a heist story, the MacGuffin, the object everyone wants — in this case, the gold — is ultimately only a means to an end, to something more important for the both the protagonist AND the antagonist. There is always something more at stake than merely acquiring the coveted object. What is that ‘something’ in this story? What are the stakes?

This might not be at all what you’re after, just a thought that popped into my head when I read this. It doesn’t work if you want an innocent and moral main charachter, however.

How about when the solar storm hits, this bankman sees a chance to get away with a lot of money for his family, not realizing that someone else has their eye on the money as well?

I like the story you have alreasdy as well, but I thought I’d throw that out there.

As a former banker I know you’re right, but I was more thinking of a “gold reserve manager” (or someone knowing exactly where the hidden reserve is). I thought that could be something unfolding later when the clan leader catches up forcing the protagonist to help him get the gold, or the protagonist’s family gets killed.

Why does he hunt down the banker? (Bankers don’t own the gold in the banks they manage — they are custodians of other people’s wealth. Unless they embezzle…).

Wouldn’t it be easier, faster — and a bigger haul — for the clan-leader to take advantage of the breakdown of law and order and loot bank vaults and safe deposit boxes in the city for the gold he covets?
