I?m no expert on the matter but I will say that it’s not the boxing ring rather what motivates the boxer to enter it that will sell the script. In other words, develop the story around the boxer character but don?t let the boxing alone be his goal.
As others have said, the story line seems too similar to other boxing movies.? It needs a fresh angle, a novel twist that clearly makes it stand out as unique rather than merely a knock off of previous boxing movies.
While this would definitely?be an odd turn for your story
What if you made your lead character Muslim
His parents are first generation immigrants
He grew up in America where the idea of ‘follow your dream’ is innate.
His parents believe in hard work and stability, they want him to take over the family business they build from the ground up.
They want him to give up this foolish dream of boxing
Now the event happens, out of the blue he gets a big match, the kind that will make or break his career
But he gets no support from those he loves, no matter how much he tries to convince them this is the path he must take.
Just an idea, something that might separate your story from other boxing stories. (I honestly don’t think I have ever seen a movie about a Muslim boxer)
Shorten the setup.
A struggling unsuccessfully young boxer…
I don?t know your story. But I?d give him a super hard choice. He can take a dive, make some money and prove his family right that he is a loser. Or he can fight, win and prove them wrong and face the consequences.
Pride and self fulfilment vs money and humiliation.
Of flip the get out of the hood element and maybe this is someone trying to get out of the Hamptons.
I think what Foxtrot is saying is; because this could be the logline to Rocky, you need to add that one extra element ‘in the logline’ that separates your story from the Sylvester Stalone blockbuster.
Hollywood loves ‘the same but different’ so maybe do, Rocky but as an MMA fighter instead of as a boxer. (Or add that one extra element that is in your story that is unique)
This sounds promising, albeit, done before. If it’s just another “boxer trying to break out of the hood” story can you think about what makes yours stand out and add that into the log?
Is it the antagonists? His family in particular? What genre can you mix with this that we haven’t seen before?
