@ Nir Shelter:
I definitely see your point. However, being a member of the western world and having been exposed to the strong and classic imagery of The Exorcist?as well as other Christianity-based supernatural movies?the “an atheist must work with an exorcist” part brings all the Catholic clich?s to mind. On the contrary, the Muslim element was what got me hooked with the concept. It’s fresh, it’s diverse, I think it should be kept in.
Moreover, I find the definition of the demon as a jinn (or djinn) also important?even if admittedly it is a little elaborate. Considering that jinns were part of the pre-Islamic mythology, this gives us the idea that the demon is unknown ground not only for the atheist, but for the Muslim exorcist as well.
Other than that, I agree 100% with your definition of the story’s inner/outer conflict:
The bigger problem with the logline is the vague nature of the descriptions – Jinn (like you suggested) is unclear and “…unfamiliar sources…” is too generic. Seeing as the MC is likely delusional, it may help to phrase it so the supernatural aspect could be seen as a figment of his imagination.
For example:
Inspired by real events, after he thinks a demon is haunting his house, an atheist must work with an exorcist to clear it out.
The specific theology is irrelevant and the type of spirit has no impact on the story. What matters most is that you have a man who doesn’t believe in God (or the supernatural) but is forced to deal with it directly.
My instincts tell me that you should probably drop the “Inspired by real events” since generally speaking, mythological?creatures don’t exist (So how could the events be real) but others on this site might have a different opinion.
However, the rest should be an easy fix.

“When his home is haunted by a jinn; a supernatural creature from Islamic lore, an irreligious man must seek the help of a Muslim exorcist to rid his home of the demonic creature.”
It seems that what sets the story in motion is discovering?his home is haunted by the Jinn; because that leads to his plan of action.
