I am not trying to write a John Hughes movie 25 years later, where effectively the issues and motivations of the characters are the same, and as campy as they were in High School?. The feel of my movie will be adult, but still irreverent and fun.
Ferris Bueller (in the original movie) as a character study is very CONSERVATIVE (read, he would have voted for G.W. Bush and would have been proud of it), I plan to play on that.
In my spin Ferris Bueller is a person who, as in high school everything just works out for never really had to struggle or develop as human being (but still a good, fun, lovable and most of all charming person at the core). After College Ferris became a sales person at a very successful (read legally toooooo successful) mutual fund company. Later, after his career had evolved him into the VP of Sales?, it is discovered the mutual fund is actually a pozi scheme. All the senior management including Ferris, who always claimed not to know about the dubious nature of the fund managers, is found guilty and sentenced to an eternity in jail (opening scene). Bail is extended to Ferris who has been under house arrest to get his affairs in order. In his last night of apparent freedom, Ferris is determined to not report to prison well rested? in the morning. Ferris recruits the help of his two long-time friends Cameron and Sloan to accomplish this task.
– Cameron is a elite? computer geek and techy. His skills are required to begrudgingly bust Ferris out for the night.
– Sloan is married, a long-time friend who still feels the sting over Ferris and her breakup in College? her fidelity is put to the test helping to comfort Ferris as his wife left him (dragging his kids away) when the scandal of the ponzi scheme first hit the press.
– The sister, is bitter about the bad press and ridicule she is receiving for being Ferris?s sister. She wants him to rot in prison for her embarrassment.
Yes it is purely a writing exercise, my first script, and therefore my worst :-). I am using it to learn the process without a lot of the pressure.
Unless this is a personal writing exercise for you, writing an unauthorized sequel to copyrighted material is, bluntly, a waste of time. But if you can create an original story using the character of Bueller as an inspiration for your own original character, then I think you have a pretty good premise. I like the idea of a felon going crazy wild on his last night of freedom. Has shades of After Hours, Desperately Seeking Susan. Although, if he’s under house arrest, does that mean his last night is spent in his home? A contained comedy? Why not have him escape, cut off his ankle bracelet and really go wild in the city while the cops go crazy trying to find him? Just a thought…
Best of luck!
