      Hi Richiev,

Yeah – certainly, the logline is missing an I.I.

Then something happens that makes him question his life choices.

What story event makes the lead character look inward?

I’m not entirely sure how sordid the sexual depravities gets. This is why I wasn’t sure what is darker – the internet (being a pornstar) or being a gigolo (people are strange).

Gigolo to pornstar (He goes from nobody… to somebody. he’s just a whore for the public. He’s doing things for the public. Things he doesn’t quite agree with. But he feels loved and he doesn’t want that feeling to go away.)

Pornstar to gigolo. (He goes from macho/loved by many to doing dirty disgusting things with strangers. He thought the internet was a dark place – but the real world is far worse.)

IMO – the internet is probably a far darker and sordid place ha.

There’s certainly something universal here. A message about the Internet age/instant gratification/Facebook. I haven’t quite figured it out yet.

Perhaps the solution is to have another character going in the reverse direction. A woman – a ying to his yang. We’ll see. Perhaps they fall in love. The love they’re both desperately searching for was right in front of them.

Very very dark story – with a hopeful last minute.?

I agree with dpg, bringing this into the modern day and presenting a porn actor whose star is waning and struggling to maintain his lifestyle is a more interesting (to me) story.

This could be closer to your ‘toxic masculinity’ exploration than love and sex. ?A porn star who made his money in his macho image (still a thing in porn, if not mainstream film) losing everything that made him a man’s man…. He’s forced to be a prostitute, but prefers ‘gigolo’ because it’s, well, masculine!

Either he has an epiphany or it’s a cautionary tale that spirals into his ruin… I’d watch it!

      Regards
      Trix

What sets the story in motion?

You have a gigolo who sells sex for money- Life is normal (For the lead character)

Then something happens that makes him question his life choices.

What story event makes the lead character look inward?

      Hi DPG,

      Thanks for your thoughts.

My 2014 version was set in 1980s – so it probably would be closer to the second half of “Boogie Nights”.

Very good idea about switching it around. Also – I hadn’t even thought about setting this now. Certainly – one could say something a lot more about porn in the internet age.

Now I’m thinking less “American Gigolo” and more “Her”.

Hmm.? Hasn’ t he already sold out his soul merely by being a gigolo?? So wouldn’t being a porn star be only a matter of degree?

And anyway, loglines are not about “being forced to decide”.? Loglines are about the decision made, the action and consequences that follow.? What is his objective goal?

BTW: hetero male porn stars have always been paid (on average) less than female stars.? It’s the one entertainment industry where women dominate (if not in role playing).? And as with other entertainment businesses, the rise of the Internet has been disruptive; the glut of internet porn , particularly the competition from amateur porn, has driven down profit margins for producers and salaries for the pros.

So perhaps it might be interesting to flip the setup such that he’s a porn star who has to do gigolo gigs because he can no longer earn a living as a porn pro.? Or he can’t earn enough to enjoy the lifestyle he aspires to, to keep paying the mortgage and the child support as a result of his one or two or three failed but fertile marriages or relationships.

Whatever. I think there might be an updated story of? “Boogey Nights”– set in the age of the internet.

Another idea from 2014 (part of my “Investigation into sex and love” series ha). I wanted to do something in the vein of a Paul Shrader film.

Reading it – I think it’s all far too internal. Introspective. Hero isn’t actively doing anything.

There’s no way I’d ever sell this ha.
