When a man's visions of a lover from a past life reveal she may also be alive today, his initial curiosity turns to an all-consuming obsession as he attempts to challenge fate to be with her once again.

This is a logline I currently use for a completed script titled – CONNECT.
Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Haunted by a lost love, a man’s curiosity turns to obsession as he challenges fate to win the love of her reincarnation.

Are we talking “Vertigo,” or “The Mummy”?

It’s in the vein of reincarnation, but the driving forcing of the story is in his attempts to find a woman that everyone else believes “doesn’t exist” (for obvious reasons).

So kind of like, “Somewhere in time?”

When a man’s visions of a lover from a past life reveal she may also be alive today,
Great. As SQM pointed out, this is a concept that has worked in the past and I would love to see it done again – differently.

his initial curiosity turns to an all-consuming obsession as
This can be easily omitted. I like to see every movie hero obsessively follow their goal.

he attempts to challenge fate to be with her once again.
Here we hit a snag. It’s too vague. What does ‘challenge fate’ mean?

I have no idea what to expect in terms of what type of movie this is going to be. What obstacles does he have to overcome to find his love? Is she not returning his love? Is she married? Is she elusive? Is she a ghost? And what can he do about it?

Clarify what his ‘main action’ will be throughout the story and give us the obstacle(s).

      That said: I’m intrigued!

Thanks Karel and SQM, this exercise has been an eye opener for me. We get so caught up in our stories (in OUR own heads) that the seemingly simple ideas get muddied up with useless and often misleading detail. Your experienced comments are very much appreciated.

My head hurts from trying to crack this one open. If anyone has a minute, please take a look at my site: http://www.joeymay.com for a short synopsis of this story (I don’t want to clutter the page here). Perhaps having a better understanding of the story will open it up.

SQM: Good observation with remembering the film “Somewhere in Time”. What makes this story different is that the protagonist’s visions reveal that his past lover is ALSO alive today – in present time. His challenge initially begins with trying to find her. But the real twist is that someone else is too – A 160 year ‘Love Triangle’ if you will.

      Thanks,
      -Joey

The premise reminds me a little of Dead Again with Emma Thompson, I guess because of the reincarnation theme.

I agree with an above poster about the “attempt to challenge fate”. It sounds more like he is trying to go up against what most of us conceive of as “reality” vs what might be simply a creation of one’s own mind.

I came across a sad website once in the late 90s where a widower had visions of a woman and even designed a website dedicated to finding her. Had worked in photoshop to come up with an image of what she looked like even, along with her hobbies. Is it sort of along those lines?
