“approval seeking” – find a better word for this. Is insecure enough?
Is this a short or a feature? I don’t think the stakes are high enough to make the story compelling. Can you infer that perhaps his girlfriend is really his fiance, that one of the men in the village is her old (extremely muscular) boyfriend, and that if he doesn’t rise to the challenge he’s going to lose her?
It’s like Run Fatboy Run with a quaint little Finnish competition thrown in.
Right, what’s at stake? What does the hairstylist stand to lose if he can’t “man up”? It’s got to be more than just face.
