In addition -- everything needs to be visual and specific. Some examples:
How do you show "our quest for knowledge" on-screen?
Is this an intel-gathering or a research expedition to this part of space? If the former, does this civil war threaten our species and how?. And if the latter, who is behind the expedition -- a benign entity or something like those behind the "Alien" franchise?
Is the technology possessed by the humans inferior to both sides of the civil war?
Is the civil war between good and evil, or are both evil, or what?
How do the humans get caught in the fray?
Etc.
I think you have a strong general premise; it just needs to be more specifically visual.

Some thoughts,

Who is the lead character?
What civil war, is it here on earth or in space.
If the astronauts are already a group, they don't need to band together
Is fighting the only proof we are worth savings? Is there another way to prove it.
Saving from what? Is there some sort of disaster coming?
What will happen if they don't prove we are worth saving? What are the stakes?

Anyway, I was just curious.
