I’m hooked on the premise of a genie in a pill bottle — that’s a good one.? But? I’m not particularly intrigued by the story line that follows.

I suggest brainstorming the premise, digging for a deeper and richer story.? Like what kind of pills were in the bottle?? Pain killers, anti-depressants, sleeping pills?? And how could the kind of medication in the pill bottle relate thematically to his subjective problem?? And what if the genie’s only has the power to grant wishes offer the kind of relief the medication is supposed to provide?? And what if the small print — the warning about side effects — applies to whatever wish the genie grants as well as.

After a homicidal maniac escapes his cell in a locked-down mental health institution, a greenhorn security guard must fight for his life.
    (22 words)

That he also fights to save others is?certainly part of the story, but I’m guessing he would be the primary focus of the maniac’s rage because of his position and uniform. Hence, the focus of the logline.

That you’re writing from personal knowledge of the character type and the context is a plus.

    Best wishes with your project.

    >>>wouldn?t writers need a bit more space to accurately convey these larger pitches?

Perhaps. But because of the multiplication of media platforms and production options,? everything I read suggests that the competition for attention, quality eye time, is fiercer than ever.? Imho, the best strategy for an unrepresented writer to pitch a more complex story line is to first get an agent and make a sale for a simpler one.

My advice is to roll your own.? It’s the best way to learn.? My original objective goal was to prove the hypothetical, that the ideal logline length is 25 words or less.
