All of these suggestions imply two way traffic to the world that is accessed and that bad things are on the other side.

"opens a gateway to a hostile world"

"opens a portal.."

"opens a bridge"

"opens a link to a savage world..."

>>>her objective goal would be to ?close the door before it's too late? (monsters from the other realm invade).

That objective goal is framed as a negative, what the mother must prevent -- an invasion. ?And it seems to be an incomplete resolution of the dramatic problem.

Closing the door may be a necessary milestone in the plot -- it removes the threat ?of the monsters-- ?but it ?leaves her son back where he -- and the story -- started, ?in autistic isolation. ?If that's where the film ends, then the story leaves the audience with an unsatisfactory non-resolution of the core dramatic problem.?

Wouldn't the solution to the dramatic problem of her son's isolation entail finding a way to use the channel into his mind ?to rescue him not just from the monsters, but from his isolation? ?Shouldn't that be the overarching objective goal?
