When a lethal virus that has already claim the life of his wife and son threaten the rest of his family a disgraced suicidal scientist must learn to forgive himself and races against time to find a cure.
I suggest the "unknown virus" be the cause of death of his wife and son, the inciting incident that triggers hims to find a vaccine. That would establish a more direct and emotional causal relationship between the virus and his objective goal.

Following the death of his wife and her son, an alcoholic veternarian contemplates suicide only to discover an unknown virus that threatens mankind. As the world descends into chaos, he tries to protect his dead wife's sister and nephew against natures wrath while seeking his own redemption.
