Nice, unique characterization of your protagonist (something I'm struggling with on my Giacomo screenplay). Some might say it's a stretch for a witch doctor's apprentice to receive the scholarship, but (according to Blake Edwards, at least) you can get away with one piece of magic,? but no more, and I'll buy it. Besides, some of the Ivy League schools go out of their way to offer scholarships to minority groups, and it seems that witch doctor's apprentices would be a slight minority.

I like the twist of holding up his own mother's business ? but, would it work if his mother was approving, rather than disapproving? That way, instead of having to choose between right and wrong, he's forced to make the choice between right and more right.?

In line with the previous point, why can't he fund the travel by other means, such as hitting up one of the school's benefactors?

Next, for the sake of clarity, you might want to put Kenya? in the beginning, so the reader doesn't imagine your character is from the Caribbean or elsewhere before s/he gets to the final phrase. For example: A Kenyan witch doctor's apprentice, recipient of a prestigious Ivy League medical scholarship, plots to hold up his disapproving mother's struggling business to fund his travel to the United States.

Finally ? for the moment, at least ? what is his inner goal ? what does he need to do to improve as a human being? I think if you come up with the answer to that, you'll have a strong conflict between that and the presumed need to steal.
