This is a very interesting idea. But what if they were not dishonorably discharged? What if they were honorably discharged, not held accountable for a friendly fire incident that they feel immense guilt for. This would give them more motivation to help the mother of their fallen comrade if the world sees them as heroes but they know the truth. Also, imagine if the mother doesn't know how her son died, and must be told after she is rescued. I think there's a lot more tension there with that one little change.

Shorter is better. good premise. The rest is assumed or irrelevant.
