      isolation of personal soundscapes–huh?

(I don’t know what this means in a practical and visual sense)

I appreciate your question. This is actually a 10-15 minute play but I was asked for a logline. Here’s a longer description:
Two teenagers and a parent are isolated by their use of headphones, ear buds, and noise protection–i.e., personal soundscapes. Whenever an actor?s ear is uncovered the audience can hear what that person is hearing. When the ear is again covered the stage goes silent while the action continues. The teens play air guitars. At the end the parent joins them on drums?much to their surprise?and the isolation is overcome.

So how would you tackle it?

Not sure what this logline is aimed at achieving, it sounds like your describing an audio visual technique on stage. where as a logline would typically be used to road test core plot points of a story.

Perhaps try thinking of the play in terms of the dramatic device that is currently preventing the 3 characters from finding joy. Then call the 3 characters the protagonists (a multi protagonist plot) and the dramatic device the obstacle. From this you could perhaps figure out the action the protagonists need to do to achieve their goal joy.

To help you wold perhaps need to answer these kind of questions for your self – Why cover up their ears? why uncover their ears? What is motivating them to play music and why are they in isolation in the first place? etc…

      Hope this helps.

Thank you indeed for your thoughts.

Around my house, with teenagers, the questions seems to be “Why should I uncover my ears, pause my music and have conversation with you??” It’s like the motivation IS the milieu or vice versa.

Typical audience will be high school students who are almost universally invested in “personal soundscapes” to the exclusion of the world around them.
