A researcher takes the stand for humanity, when the creation of artificial intelligence puts the human race into challenge

Tersely put, but "takes the stand for humanity" and "into challenge" are a little flat. What's your protagonist's main objective or driving force? We know the root of the conflict (A.I.) but what form does that conflict take?

A little restructuring might also help the delivery: "With the creation of (the first?) Artificial Intelligence, a researcher must [take the stand for humanity] after/as [??]"
