Vampires VS Zombies
There a spec floating around that has a big buzz, and it's the same idea. A Zombie movie, but the twist is it's about a Vampire. The story tugs on the heart strings, as the Vampire finds a human he wants to save, thus going against what he is.
Okay.
To my mind, the novelty of the story -- the hook -- isn't the invasion. It's the unnatural relationship between humans and vampires forged out of necessity.
And if played correctly, I can see the makings of a franchise. Based upon what I read in the trades, stories of this genre are more marketable if they have franchise potential. The Twilight franchise was built upon a love relationship between a vampire and a human. Why can't your story be the beginning of a beautiful friendship between a vampire and a human? An odd couple who time and again, despite their differences, must partner up to "save the world" from zombies... aliens... witches.. demons -- the potential enemy list for franchise episodes is unlimited!
And I don't see why the MC can't be a vampire. Vampires are potentially more interesting than humans -- they intrinsically have more internal and external conflicts to deal with, do they not? And vampires were once human, too.
Anyway, the invasion, per se, doesn't hook my interest. But the potential for a beautiful franchise friendship? I hope you give it some serious development.
