Something must happen for the character to lose faith, and some strong goal driven by the tragedy during which she encounters something equally awesome to retain faith. It may be an accidental encounter of amazing kindness that jolts her out of despair that will help her to reach her goal. Hope that makes sense.

Too vague. What is the tragedy? Once it happens, what is your protagonist's goal?

I would dispense with "Driven to dispair". Assuming that you are refering to the youn woman, a person who is clinging onto their faith is not going to dispair.
