This one is a little tough because you are giving us a lot. Turning 50, dysfunctional (Not sure what that means) rescue animals, insane rage, husband leaving with psychiatrist

Also, It would have more impact if it was 'her' (25 year old) psychiatrist her husband ran off with. He isn't mentally ill just a jerk who has dominated her and so she has never been independent:
