It would be great to see a twist on this initial idea...perhaps your medicine man can cure others but he can't cure himself?

You have only given us a concept; you have not indicated a goal, antagonist or stakes. Also; is the medicine man your main character, or is he the mentor that your protagonist meets?

A college educated doctor must apprentice himself to the last medicine man in the Peruvian Amazon to prevent the old shaman's profound knowledge of jungle medicine from dying with him.
