That is true, but I don’t think that was really FFF’s point. I think he was really saying that what the boy does isn’t what should be in the logline, but remove it and use what the father does as the inciting incident. So, to me it’s good in the story but it could be removed from the logline.

For example: When his abusive stepfather hammers a nail into his hand, a boy joins an underground fight club to toughen up and confront him.?(~23 words)

But I suppose it’s actually fine either way. :

When a boy’s abusive stepfather hammers a nail into his hand when he wrecks his beloved Harley-Davidson, the boy joins an underground fight club to toughen up and confront him.?(~32 words)

The fact that he’s not a cop is what is the challenge. He doesn’t have training, weapons, or resources to take on a seasoned killer. Giving him a disability would make the story less believable, because of his lack of training and disability combined. .
It seems to differ in that it’s not a mystery at all; he knows who did it and is trying to stop him. He may have to figure out where he’s going and such, but as the genre is labelled ‘Horror’ it seems more horror than police procedural.
Besides, it is similar to an established idea, the police procedural, yet it is different. While maybe you have run dry on standard police types(I don’t even watch procedural so I know how you feel), studios are still looking for them. It different enough to be a bit unique but familiar enough to probably not be considered a risk.
I think making the killer unique is probably the way to go.?

What does wartime have to do with it? You say new?woman‘s league, so it’s not as if the war takes all of the men and the women must play in their place.

When two sisters join a new women’s baseball league on different teams, they must compete against each other for the championship.
