You classify the genre as noir. ?Have you thought about making it a comedy, a comedy of errors? ?As a comedy of errors, the incompetent PI would work just fine.

Now a character can have a subjective problem , a flaw, and the love interest can help him overcome it. ?But the key to his overcoming his fear of the dark must be located ?within himself, not in another person. ?He just needs to find it and use it. ?That’s his character arc.
But why does he need to overcome his fear of the dark? ?What urgent, desperately desired outer objective goal does he need to achieve and the only way he can is by overcoming his inner flaw?
