When a strange presence steps in their life with the intent to take care of their neglected daughter, her parents will have to get over the divorce trying to show how much do they take care of her before it’s too late.
I think the child convincing the parents is the way to go here as far as establishing the protagonist. After you do that, you can really write the specifics of her challenge.

I for one am totally tired of the Antagonistic government scenario. It seems to have been done to death.
Now, if the antagonist was also someone with unlimited wishes, and a war of wishes broke out where they unwish each other… that could be somewhat interesting.

Surviving is a goal, sure. It's a reactionary goal. You want a proactive goal as well. In T2, sure, they had to survive the liquid terminator, but destroying the future tech before it became skynet was the real goal. That's what you need.
