Nir, you make a great point. I do think it could work if one of the humans was the lead. Maybe a human who's mother or father had been killed by a vampire.

DPG, Ruthless was used because he is a vampire who would normally eat humans but now, for the sake of survival, must play nice. (and over the course of the movie learn to respect humans)

They are trapped and there are simply too many zombies, if the Vampires and Humans don't work together they will die.
