If the nerd needs the charms of the jock to get the girl for the prom then it seems to me the story would be more interesting if ?the jock needs the ?brains of the nerd to stay eligible and play in the championship game. ?They're a high school Odd Couple who despise each other -- and need each other.

I would note that in mine I added that the jock was popular as well as dumb.

That makes more sense, You have two characters who are opposite:
The lead character is a genius but has no social skills
The Jock gets along with everyone, but isn't that bright

As a result you have both conflict (Because they are opposite) and as the story develops, both characters learn something from the experience and gain mutual respect.

Now you could actually add one more element. The lead is a girl. she is this awkward but super intelligent social outcast. She has her eyes on the most popular boy in school.
she hires this easy going, not so bright jock who get's along with everyone
Over the course of the story the audience will see that she really belongs with him not her crush.
