I think you might be right about the 'joke part. I was thinking that he created her as a 'joke' but really he was just lonely. So that's what he tells people so he doesn't get embarrassed. As for the concept, I think starting with Mannequin, and the Lars and the real girl… (I need to watch Her) this has been done before, I am sort of updating the tech (Slight future tech) and trying to have a bit of a different take on the character.
